A man was taken to a Hamilton hospital with life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle accident Wednesday on Highway 403, between Garden Avenue and Copetown Road.

Police said the accident happened just after 4 p. m. when a pickup truck travelling westbound on the 403 crossed the median between Sunnyridge and Jerseyville roads, went through the guardrail, and hit the Sunnyridge Road bridge abutment.

Police said the truck burst into flames and the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was pulled to safety by passersby. The man, who hasn't yet been identified, was taken to Hamilton General Hospital.

The accident caused a major traffic jam on a busy stretch of highway between Brantford, Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville during rush hour.

Police are looking for witnesses who may know where the driver had been prior to accident and where he was heading.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 1-905- 681-2511.
